THE DELAWARE COUNTY RURAL HEATLHCARE ALLIANCE

is predicated upon the belief that collaboratively and collectively we can achieve far more with far less than we can as isolated organizations. Projects of the Alliance are often carried out by member and partner agencies, with the Alliance serving as convener and planner.

• Maximizing the ability of the local healthcare system to provide the highest quality healthcare possible for Delaware County residents. Healthcare providers are large employers and contribute to the local economy.
• The Alliance supports the health delivery system by expanding availability of preventive and wellness services.
• Educating consumers of health services regarding health and wellness issues in Delaware County.
• Promoting collaboration among health and human services providers.

GERIATIC MENTAL HEALTH

The Delaware County NY Connects with partial funding from the Rural Health Care Alliance is offering a series on Geriatric Mental Health.  Delaware County is 2nd in the State with the largest elderly population which will continue to grow with the baby boomers and aging Hippies joining the ranks.  The goal is to educate long term care professionals on the need of the aging population and unique mental illnesses that would include Viet Nam Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The first part of the series held in March focused on the lack of readiness to meet the challenges of the elder boom and common late life mental disorders. Over 100 providers from county health and human service organizations attended the training.

The second workshop scheduled for May 25th will be held at SUNY Delhi.  Registration begins at 8:30 AM and the program presentation Therapeutic Techniques of Validation by Ann Marie Thayer, Leatherstocking Region Program Manager Alzheimer’s Association and Jenny Kilpatrick, RN, Community Health Supervisor, Public Health Nursing will begin from 9:05 to 11:30 AM; followed by a luncheon from11:45 to 1 PM and at 1 to 3 PM Cary Reid, MD, PhD, a Weill Cornell faculty member, will present Understanding the Depression/Pain Dyad in Later Life.  To register for the workshop or additional information, please contact Laura Stewart at NY Connects 607-746-6333.  The final two workshops will be held in July and September to complete the series.

The long term benefits of these trainings will provide a more knowledgeable workforce with a better understanding of the mental health disorders in older adults and more focused therapy and treatments.
