"CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF QUILTING" PROJECT

Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Delaware County has been working with the Delaware County Cancer Coalition to educate the public on cancer awareness and screening through quilting.  This year Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Delaware County’s Executive Director, Jeanne Darling, is offering quilters and the public another opportunity to participate in a quilting project to support cancer education and screening.

2011 marks the Centennial Celebration of Cornell Cooperative Extension in New York State.   Quilters are encouraged to enroll in “Celebrating a Century of Quilting” Project and create quilted projects from fabric scraps.  Quilted projects can feature favorite old quilt patterns made by quilters in the last century.  Quilters can add captions to their quilted projects that feature the history of the quilt pattern they have selected for their project.

To participate in “Celebrating a Century of Quilting” project, each individual or group is asked to complete a wall hanging or mini-quilt by Friday, July 15, 2011.  The quilted projects will be displayed at the Delaware County Fair August 15-20, 2011 and will be available for bid.  Quilt projects bid money will be donated to Relay for Life.  Quilters can also volunteer to do quilting demonstrations at the fair and display old quilted projects.

Ms. Darling would like to thank all the quilters who have participated in quilted cancer projects that have funded cancer education and screening.  For more information about this year’s quilt project or to receive a copy of the project guidelines, please call Jeanne Darling at Cornell University Cooperative Extension at 607-865-6531 or e-mail vsd22@cornell.edu.
